Wike Tells PDP What To Do Over 2027 Presidential Election
Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, has insisted that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), must not give its 2027 presidential ticket to the Northern part of Nigeria.
Wike made this known during a media chat on Monday, with his comments seen as a direct message to Atiku Abubakar, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate.
“PDP cannot give the presidential ticket to the North (in 2027),” Wike said.
The minister condemned internal selfishness within the party, warning, “Selfishness can kill a system.”
He argued that such a move would weaken the PDP’s relevance in future contests, especially if the ruling party retains power.
“For example, if Mr President runs and wins in 2027, by 2031, APC will send their presidential ticket to the North.
“PDP will do what then? You will come back then and say since APC is sending it to the North, we should follow them and give it to the North?”
Meanwhile, it was reported in April how Wike criticised former PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar over coalition talks ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Wike claimed that those seeking a coalition were driven by selfish interests, particularly the ambition to become president.
“Everybody wants to become president of the country. Nobody wants to say, ‘Look, let me build our party so that at the end of the day our party will be in a formidable position as an opposition party to take over power,’” Wike said during a media parley aired on a TVC programme, as monitored by SaharaReporters.
He also slammed PDP governors for attempting to direct the affairs of the opposition party, describing them as insincere. Wike described the Governors’ Forum as only a pressure group, not an organ of the party, and therefore lacked the power to make public decisions.
“The governors forum is a pressure group that can put influence on the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party. You cannot take the functions of the NWC and say because you are governor, you now superintend,” he stated.
