BREAKING: Explosion Rocks Rivers Assembly Over Alleged Plot Of impeachment
On Sunday night, an explosion shook the Rivers State House of Assembly building.
The incident occurred as some lawmakers allegedly attempted to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Around 9:25 p.m., several suspected arsonists tossed an explosive into the complex, igniting a fire in the structure.
Though the state police command’s spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, could not be reached on her cell phone, a senior police officer verified the occurrence to our correspondent.
According to our source, some of the items inside the chamber were destroyed.
The officer, who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the situation, stated the event was politically driven.
“That is correct. The fire started around 9:30 p.m. But, as we speak, the fire has been extinguished by firefighters who arrived just in time. “I believe it has something to do with politics,” he remarked.
According to our source, certain lawmakers in the state legislature have agreed to first impeach the House leader, Eddison Ehie, in order to clear the way for Fubara’s dismissal.
The House leader is reported to have obstructed measures to depose Fubara.
Our reporter, who arrived at the Assembly at 10:30 p.m., writes that police and other security personnel had taken control of the complex, with approximately 17 security trucks and one Armoured Personnel Carrier stationed at the entrance and surrounding areas.
