BREAKING: #AnambraDecides2025: Gunmen Storm Voting Centre, Kill Councillor
A councillor representing Owerre Ezukala community, Orumba South Local Government Area, Anambra State has been reportedly shot and killed by unknown gunmen during the ongoing governorship election.
The tragic incident happened Owerre Ezukala Ward 1 around 1:30pm.
According to eyewitnesses, unknown gunmen stormed the voting centre in Owerre Ezukala ward one and shot the councillor while he was attempting to cast his vote.
Though the incident has not been confirmed by the Anambra State Police Command, community leaders confirmed that the incident sparked outrage among residents who came out en masse to exercise their franchise.
Odogwu Odemenna, a community leader said: “My ward is in flame as we speak. The councillor of my Ward was shot dead this afternoon while he was trying to cast his vote by gunmen. The community is outraged over the unfortunate incident. Security operatives were around when the incident happened but they couldn’t stopped the hoodlums.”
Odemenna who did not immediately reveal the name of the victim, added; “We have notified the police and other security agencies over the incident. Policemen and soldiers are all over the community pursuing them. A day like today, security shouldn’t have been porous in Orumba South Local Government Area to even give the hoodlums opportunity to strike. The election was going peacefully until this incident happened.”
A community leader who didn’t want his name mentioned said: “While voting in Owerre Ezukala ward 1, unknown gunmen came in and shot a top person and left. The councillor of Owerre Ezukala was fatally shot by the men.”
At the time of filing this report, the police in Anambra State has remained silent as the Command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, did not take his calls or respond to a text message seeking his reaction.
