ASUU: The 8 Month Strike Will End Soon Gbajabiamila Assures

Femi Gbajabiamila, House of Representatives speaker, has assured that the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will soon be called off.

The lawmaker said that President Muhammadu Buhari was eager to bring the over eight-month-old strike to an end.

The lawmaker gave this assurance during a meeting between members of the house and President Muhammadu Buhari held on Tuesday in Abuja.

On February 14, ASUU went on strike to press home its demands from the government, and has since engaged in a series of meetings with government representatives.

To end the strike, the house of representatives recently stepped in by having several parleys with the striking union and members of the government executive council.

At the meeting with the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, the speaker promised to present the outcomes of their meetings to the president.

After the lawmakers met with the president on Tuesday, Mr Gbajabiamila briefed journalists saying, “We had a robust engagement with the president. Mr President, as usual, had a very good listening ear.

He took the report of the House and accepted it.

We discussed at length the details of the report, and he wanted to go through them himself. 8 Month Strike.

We have another meeting on Thursday between our good selves and the President for his final decision.

We had a good engagement with a positive response,” Mr Gbajabiamila said.

The speaker concluded that once the reports were signed by the president, the ongoing strike will become a thing of the past.
