AU Executive Council: Tuggar Leads Nigeria’s Push For Peace, Democracy, And Development

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has arrived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to lead Nigeria’s delegation to the 48th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union (AU), scheduled to hold from Wednesday, 11th to Thursday, 12th February 2026, at the African Union Headquarters.
During the session, the Honourable Minister will participate in a series of ministerial meetings, high-level dialogues, side events, and bilateral engagements, in line with Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to promoting African unity, peace and security, democratic governance, and sustainable development across the continent.
Ambassador Tuggar arrived in Addis Ababa on Monday, 9th February 2026, and was warmly received by Ethiopia’s State Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Berhanu Tsegaye; the Charge d’Affaires of the Embassy of Nigeria in Ethiopia, Ambassador Nasir Aminu; and other officials and staff of the Nigerian Mission.
The Executive Council meeting precedes the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union, scheduled to take place from 14th to 15th February 2026. Nigeria’s engagement at the Summit will focus on critical continental priorities, including peace and security, democratic governance, institutional resilience, economic integration, development financing, health security, climate resilience, and the effective implementation of Agenda 2063.
On the margins of the Summit, the Honourable Minister is expected to hold bilateral meetings with counterparts from various African and non-African countries, aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s diplomatic ties and advancing shared strategic interests.
In addition, Nigeria will host and participate in selected high-level side events during the session, including a Nigerian-led forum on regional partnerships for democracy. The initiative reflects Nigeria’s longstanding commitment to democratic values, public trust, and institutional strengthening across Africa.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will provide further updates on key engagements and outcomes as the meetings progress.
