Nigerian Police Ban Firecrackers Ahead Of Christmas, Vow To Arrest Offenders

    Ban Firecrackers

The Imo State Police Command has imposed a total ban on the sale, distribution, and use of fireworks, firecrackers, and other forms of pyrotechnics across the state as the Christmas and New Year celebrations approach.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Okoye Henry, said the ban became necessary to prevent injuries, fires, and other avoidable tragedies that often accompany the uncontrolled use of fireworks during the festive season.

The Command warned that anyone caught selling, possessing, or detonating pyrotechnics, whether at public events, community gatherings, or private celebrations, will be arrested and prosecuted. Operatives have also been directed to intensify patrols and carry out targeted enforcement operations to ensure full compliance.

Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, urged residents, traders, and event organizers to adhere strictly to the directive and to report any illegal sale or use of fireworks to the nearest police station.

He assured Imo residents that robust security measures have been put in place to guarantee a peaceful Yuletide, with personnel fully deployed to protect lives and property throughout the festivities.

The Command also appreciated members of the public for their continuous cooperation in sustaining peace and security across the state.

Plateau State Police Command issued a similar announcement on Saturday. In a statement signed by its spokesperson, SP Alfred Alabo, the Command said the ban was introduced “in the interest of public safety and security” as preparations for the festive period intensify.

According to the Plateau Command, fireworks often trigger unnecessary alarm and disturb public peace. “The use of knockouts and fireworks has been known to create unnecessary panic,” the statement said.

The police warned that anyone found violating the order by selling, using, or possessing fireworks will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

Plateau State Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Adesina, appealed to parents, guardians, and religious leaders to caution their children and congregations, stressing that public cooperation will help ensure “a peaceful and safe environment for all before, during, and after the festive season.”

Both Commands reaffirmed their commitment to securing the Yuletide season, noting that similar bans were enforced across several states during the 2024 festive period to curb crime and maintain order.
