BREAKING: Many Officers Feared Dead As Bandits Ambush Nigerian Police Patrol
A mid-day patrol on a key rural road in Katsina State has turned deadly, underscoring the persistent risks faced by security personnel operating in bandit-prone corridors of the North-West. Four police officers were killed and two others injured when suspected armed bandits ambushed a patrol team along the Guga–Bakori road, a stretch that links several agrarian communities. The road has remained vulnerable to criminal activity despite sustained security operations. Sources told counterinsurgency expert, Zagazola Makama on Wednesday that the attack occurred at about 12:45 p.m. and targeted operatives of the 27 Police Mobile Force (PMF), Guga Camp, who were on routine patrol duty. The timing of the ambush, in broad daylight, highlighted the boldness of the attackers and the growing operational challenges confronting security forces in the area. According to the source, the patrol team came under sudden and intense gunfire, forcing the driver of the police vehicle to lose control. The vehicle veered off the road and crashed, leaving the officers exposed as the assailants advanced on their position. Three officers died at the scene. They were identified as ASP Abubakar Abdullahi, Insp. Umar Ahmed, and Sgt. Kailani Kabir. A fourth officer later succumbed to injuries sustained during the attack, bringing the death toll to four. The attackers reportedly overran the patrol team and carted away several service weapons. Items taken included an AK-47 rifle loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition, a Tokarev pistol with eight rounds, and a long-range gunner rifle. The loss of the arms has heightened concerns about the circulation of police-grade weapons in the hands of criminal groups operating across the state. Two other officers survived the ambush but sustained serious injuries. Cpl. Daniel Japet suffered a fracture, while Cpl. Abdulaziz Sani was hit by a gunshot. Both were evacuated for medical attention following the incident. In response, the Area Commander in Funtua mobilised joint police teams alongside troops of Operation FANSAN YANMA to the scene. The injured officers were rushed to the General Hospital in Funtua, where the deceased were also taken for autopsy. Security forces have since sealed off the surrounding areas, blocking potential escape routes used by the attackers. Cordon-and-search operations are ongoing, with a dual objective of apprehending the perpetrators and recovering the stolen weapons. The ambush adds to a growing list of attacks on security patrols in Katsina State, reflecting the continuing volatility along major and minor routes and the evolving tactics of armed groups targeting law enforcement presence.
