FG Restores Bauchi–Gombe–Billiri–Cham Road Under Emergency Intervention Programme

The Federal Ministry of Works has commissioned key Emergency/Special Intervention Projects along the Bauchi–Gombe and Gombe–Cham corridors in Gombe State, as part of efforts to restore mobility and address critical infrastructure challenges nationwide.
The projects were inaugurated on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, during a nationwide media tour under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. They form part of the 260 Emergency/Special Intervention Projects initiated in May 2023 to rehabilitate severely deteriorated sections of federal highways across the country.
Upon assumption of office, the administration inherited 2,064 ongoing road projects with a debt overhang exceeding ₦13 trillion. In light of fiscal constraints and limited resources, the Ministry prioritised highways that had either collapsed or were on the verge of total failure to restore motorability, improve safety, and facilitate economic activities.
Along the Bauchi–Gombe alignment—a critical corridor linking Bauchi, Gombe, and Adamawa States—emergency works were executed through carriageway overlays, reinstatement of shoulders, and drainage improvements. Prior to the intervention, the road had experienced significant structural failure, posing serious safety risks and hindering socio-economic activities.
With the completion of the works, the carriageway has been strengthened, riding quality significantly improved, and shoulders reinstated to allow safer parking off the main roadway, thereby reducing traffic obstruction and accident risks.
The Federal Controller of Works in Gombe State, Engr. Mohammed Jahun, confirmed that the project has restored the safety and durability of the route, noting a considerable improvement in traffic flow.
Commending the Federal Government, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Gombe State Chapter, Comrade Faruk Mu’azu, described the rehabilitation as timely and impactful. Representing the Honourable Minister, he formally commissioned the project and expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for approving the dualisation of the Akwanga–Jos–Bauchi–Gombe road. He noted that the expansion would enhance connectivity between the North Central and North-East zones and stimulate economic growth.
Also commissioned was the reinstatement of failed shoulders along the Gombe Bypass. The contract, completed within three months, covered 1.5 kilometres of road and 910 metres of drainage. Residents and road users welcomed the intervention, describing it as a relief from years of hardship.
On the Gombe–Billiri–Cham Road—another strategic link between Gombe and Adamawa States—three failed bridges were rehabilitated under the Emergency/Special Intervention scheme due to safety concerns, particularly for nighttime travel. The scope of work included restoration of damaged handrails, rehabilitation of bridge abutments, stone pitching, reconstruction of wing walls, and reinforcement of structural components to enhance stability and visibility.
Engr. Jahun explained that the rehabilitation has eliminated previous hazards and significantly improved structural integrity, ensuring safer passage for commuters.
The projects were officially handed over for public use by the Chairman of the Gombe State Correspondents’ Chapel, Mr. Hudu Shehu, who represented the Minister. He expressed hope that the roads would serve the collective interests of the people and contribute to regional development.
The Bauchi–Gombe stretch is also part of the approved 4th Renewed Hope Legacy Road Project, which involves the dualisation of the highway from Akwanga through Jos to Bauchi and terminating in Gombe. Other Legacy Projects include the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway, the Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway, and the Calabar–Abuja Highway. These flagship projects are designed using Continuous Reinforced Concrete Pavement (CRCP) technology and will feature street lighting and rail lines to enhance connectivity across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.
