Many Causalities As Container Falls On Commercial Bus

On Sunday a tragic accident occurred in Lagos when a 40-feet container fell on a commercial mini bus, resulting in the loss of one life.

Three persons also suffered varying degrees of injuries.

According to witnesses, the incident happened when the container being transported by a truck detached and landed on the commercial bus, leaving the driver dead on the spot.

The witnesses also said that the impact of the crash caused significant damage to the bus and trapped several other passengers inside.

Some of the trapped passengers also sustained minor injuries while trying to scramble out of the damaged vehicle.

Emergency responders from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Police, and passersby, rushed to the scene to rescue those trapped and provide medical assistance.

The injured victims were taken to a nearby hospital.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation, but authorities have urged drivers to exercise caution and ensure their vehicles are in good condition to prevent such incidents.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, confirmed the incident, saying that it occured in the early hours of Sunday, June 22, 2025, along Old Ipaja Road by Agbotikuyo, en route to Iyana Ipaja.

Giwa stated that the accident involved a fully-laden 40-foot Mack containerized truck (MUS 729 XY).

According to him, the truck suffered brake failure and that unfortunately toppled onto a commercial minibus — colloquially referred to as ‘Korope’.

“Tragically, the devastating impact led to the death of the minibus driver, leaving three persons, two females and one male injured.

“The fallen articulated truck obstructed over 50 percent of the arterial carriageway, resulting to a heavy traffic along the road. The rippled affected the adjoining routes, notably Shofunde and Olufunlayo. LASTMA operatives immediately instituted comprehensive traffic diversion and control protocols to alleviate the congestion and maintain orderliness,” he added.

He disclosed that the truck driver, in a failed attempt to abscond from the scene, was apprehended by vigilant LASTMA Officers and was promptly transferred to security personnel from both the Elere and Area ‘G’ Police Divisions, who had been duly notified by LASTMA officials.

Giwa expressed sadness and extended his condolences to the bereaved family.

He issued a stern reminder to all operators of articulated vehicles to exercise the utmost vigilance and mechanical diligence.

He said, “Truck operators must adhere strictly to safety protocols. It is non-negotiable that every articulated vehicle undergo thorough mechanical inspection — especially the braking systems — before venturing onto our roads. Preventable tragedies like this underscore the need for unwavering compliance.”

He also assured the public that the State Government remains resolute in its commitment to traffic safety enforcement, robust emergency responsiveness, and the relentless pursuit of roadworthiness compliance to avert further loss of lives.
