Cooking Gas Prices Soar To ₦2,300 Amid Scarcity

Long queues have resurfaced across Lagos as the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), popularly known as cooking gas, has skyrocketed to between ₦1,700 and ₦2,300 per kilogramme.

Naija News House  observed that this development has sparked widespread outrage and hardship among residents already battling rising fuel and food costs.

Social media is awash with lamentations from frustrated Nigerians who say the situation has become unbearable.

On X (formerly Twitter), users shared disturbing accounts of the worsening crisis.

Bolaji Fesomade wrote: “When some of us warned that PENGASSAN’s antics would disrupt the market and hike gas prices, many attacked us. Now look—cooking gas is ₦1,700 per kg! Just months ago, it was below ₦1,000. This is what happens when unions play politics instead of protecting the people.”

Another user, Abu Amir, fumed at the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), saying, “Fuel queues are back, subsidy is gone, taxes have increased, and cooking gas is selling for ₦2k/kg. Again, it shall never be well with APC and its supporters.”

@DelgadoPrime, reacting to long queues at filling stations, wrote, “Saw queue at the cooking gas station this morning?!?! These people are bringing queues that have never been queued before. What is even working in the focken place?”

Others reported paying as high as ₦2,300 per kg, while a 12.5kg cylinder now costs ₦24,000 or more in some parts of Lagos.

For instance, Oge Austin lamented: “Bought this morning for ₦24k — 12.5kg this early morning.”

Abayomi, another user, noted that even high prices don’t guarantee availability, saying, “Even with ₦3,200, you will queue for hours before you can buy, and it’s not guaranteed. People have reverted back to kolo pot and charcoal in 2025. Abysmal.”

Reacting, in a post made by the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) on Monday morning, it was reported that President Bola Tinubu received the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Bashir Ojulari, in Lagos.

Ojulari reportedly told State House correspondents that the price hike and scarcity were temporary, attributing the crisis to disruptions caused by a recent dispute between the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) and Dangote Petroleum Refinery, which affected oil production, distribution, and electricity supply.

“The slight increase in cooking gas prices is temporary. We expect normal prices to return soon, all things being equal,” Ojulari said.

Amid assurances from NNPCL, frustration continues to boil online.

David Bent, an X user, mocked Nigerians’ misplaced priorities, saying, “Sat down yesterday celebrating a new celebrity who cashed out from you watching her sleep, eat & straff on live TV. Woke up this morning to your reality of the scarcity of cooking gas. When you queue well & pay more for gas to prepare your morning eba, you will understand priority.”

Similar complaints have flooded TikTok, where users are posting videos showing long queues at gas depots due to scarcity.
