Yahaya Bello Urges Renewed Commitment to Nigeria’s Cultural Heritage, Intellectual Growth
Former Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, has called on Nigerians to renew their commitment to the preservation of the nation’s cultural heritage and the promotion of intellectual development, describing culture as a vital pillar of national unity and progress.
Bello made the call on Saturday during a cultural book presentation held in Abuja. The event attracted prominent leaders, diplomats, lawmakers, cultural stakeholders, and representatives of state governors, underscoring the growing national interest in cultural and intellectual discourse.
He noted that the initiative, which was conceived only a few months ago, had quickly gained widespread acceptance and support, reflecting a shared commitment to culture, heritage, and national cohesion. According to him, the gathering demonstrated inclusiveness and unity that transcended political affiliations.
The former governor described the occasion as more than a literary event, saying it addressed broader issues such as culture, heritage, youth development, and cultural policy. He stressed that literature remains a powerful instrument for preserving identity, values, and history, particularly in a rapidly changing global environment.
Speaking on the book presented at the event, “Adangara: Legend of the Ori” by Stella Bello, he highlighted its rich cultural themes and its role in documenting and projecting indigenous heritage. Bello insisted that Nigerian culture must not be allowed to fade, noting that nations around the world continue to preserve their traditions alongside modern religious and social practices.
He called for the integration of culturally relevant literary works into Nigeria’s educational curriculum, from primary to tertiary institutions, to help young people develop a deeper understanding of their roots.
Bello further emphasized that cultural education is essential for producing confident, informed, and socially responsible citizens. He added that despite political differences, Nigerians remain one people bound by shared history, culture, and aspirations, commending individuals and institutions that consistently support cultural initiatives regardless of political affiliation.
Showering encomiums on the author, Bello pledged that he and other stakeholders would ensure the book is widely accessible both within Nigeria and internationally, including on global online platforms. He said this would help project Nigerian culture beyond the country’s borders while strengthening cultural awareness at home.
Odom Calls for Stronger Cultural Documentation, Intellectual Property Protection
Earlier, the Chairman of the occasion, Hon. Barr. Chuka Odom, a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), also called for renewed commitment to the documentation, preservation, and promotion of Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage, as well as stronger support for intellectual property rights.
Odom described “Adangara” as a significant contribution to global literary excellence, noting that the book goes beyond entertainment to serve as a powerful vehicle for cultural identity, historical consciousness, and intellectual inquiry. He praised the work for exploring Igbira culture through formal fiction in a way that is both authentic and globally relevant.
“Nigeria’s development narrative must extend beyond politics to include culture, identity, and history,” he said, stressing that documenting both historical and contemporary cultural heritage is essential to preserving national identity and strengthening Nigeria’s cultural brand on the global stage.
