Kano Strengthens Inmate Welfare, Reviews 300 Cases to Decongest Prisons

The Kano State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing inmate welfare and strengthening correctional infrastructure through sustained reforms and strategic collaboration with key stakeholders.

Speaking at a high-level stakeholders’ engagement convened by the Federal Ministry of Interior in Abuja, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Kano State, Barrister Abdulkarim Kabiru Maude (SAN), disclosed that the state has made significant progress in reforming its correctional system within the past six months.

According to him, no fewer than 300 case files have been reviewed since he assumed office, as part of deliberate efforts to decongest correctional facilities and promote timely justice delivery. He added that over 100 inmates have been successfully facilitated for release within the same period.

Maude also acknowledged the support of the Federal Government in improving conditions within correctional centres, particularly through the provision of food items, mattresses, and other essential materials aimed at enhancing inmate welfare.

Highlighting ongoing interventions, he noted that the state has undertaken several measures to address infrastructural and welfare challenges. These include the construction of additional beds—funded through personal contributions—to ease overcrowding, as well as the installation of a solar power system at the health facility of the Goron Dutse Correctional Centre through collaborative partnerships.

Other improvements, he said, include the provision of water pipes and critical equipment to ensure access to basic amenities and promote a more humane environment for inmates.

The Attorney-General further revealed that discussions are ongoing to strengthen coordination among correctional facilities and optimise the use of available infrastructure in partnership with the Federal Government.

He emphasised the state government’s readiness to continue providing support within its capacity, including infrastructural development and institutional backing, while also acknowledging the vital role of the judiciary—particularly the Office of the Chief Judge—in advancing correctional reforms.

Maude reaffirmed Kano State’s commitment to working with all relevant stakeholders to build a more efficient, humane, and rehabilitative correctional system.
