Senate Confirms Appointments Of Defence Chief, Army Chief
The Nigerian Senate has confirmed Major General Waheedi Shaibu as the new Chief of Army Staff, directing him to assume office immediately.
Shaibu’s confirmation came less than an hour after General Olufemi Oluyede was cleared as Chief of Defence Staff, marking the start of the screening process for President Bola Tinubu’s newly appointed service chiefs.
Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, described the exercise as a constitutional responsibility aimed at ensuring only competent and patriotic officers lead the nation’s security.
“There is no need to ask them too many questions because we will be having a closed-door session with them.”
Senator Isah Jubrin praised Shaibu’s competence and character, stating, “Shaibu is humble and takes his job very seriously. I believe he has what it takes to move Nigeria out of the challenges the country is experiencing today”.
Shaibu, a seasoned commander, brings over three decades of military experience, including key roles in counter-insurgency operations and strategic deployments.
His appointment is seen as a strategic move to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture.
