Dickson Rubbishes Gov Diri for Joining APC

The former Governor and Senator representing Bayelsa West, Seriake Dickson has reacted to Governor Douye Diri’s recent defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Naija News House had earlier reported that Gov Diri, on Wednesday 15th October, 2025 resigned from the PDP, the party he was elected governor of Bayelsa State.
Speaking to journalists after the news of the governor’s defection broke out, Dickson criticized Diri’s decision, accusing him of running away from the problems he created while in the PDP.
According to Dickson, Diri consulted him several times about his plan to defect, but he was never convinced, particularly since Diri is a second-term governor. Dickson emphasized the importance of a multi-party democracy, stating that Nigeria’s plural society requires functional and vibrant opposition.
The Senator expressed disappointment that Diri and other defectors are abandoning the PDP after creating problems they could not solve. “It’s very sad. Very, very sad. It’s making Nigeria look small and making our country’s democracy look ridiculous,” Dickson said.
Despite his criticism of Diri’s defection, Dickson threw his weight behind President Tinubu’s nomination of Professor Joash Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Dickson described the nomination as a good choice and pledged to support Amupitan’s confirmation.
Dickson reaffirmed his commitment to the PDP, citing the party’s role in giving the Ijaw Nation and the Niger Delta region opportunities to hold high offices, including the vice presidency and presidency.
