FG Commissions Emergency Road, Drainage Projects In Bauchi State
The Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Works, has continued the implementation of strategic road and drainage interventions across the country under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, with the restoration of critical road links and flood control infrastructure in Bauchi State.
As part of the North-East Zone National Media Tour and Commissioning of Emergency and Special Intervention Projects, activities commenced in Bauchi State on Sunday, February 8, 2026, with an inspection visit to the ongoing rehabilitation of the Bauchi–Gombe Road, a major transport corridor linking Bauchi, Gombe, Adamawa and Taraba states.
The 35-kilometre section of the road, awarded in 2024 to Messrs Triacta (Nigeria) Limited at a contract sum of ₦39.99 billion, is being rehabilitated to restore a vital transport artery that had witnessed frequent accidents and extended travel times. Ongoing construction has already led to a noticeable reduction in road crashes, while completion is expected to improve safety, shorten travel time, lower vehicle maintenance costs and stimulate economic activities across the North-East zone.
On the same day, the Ministry also commissioned two completed emergency and special intervention projects along the Bauchi–Darazo–Kari–Potiskum Road. These include the emergency repair of a collapsed concrete-lined three-cell pipe culvert at Konkiyel Town (Chainage CH 120+500), undertaken to permanently address recurrent flooding, protect farmlands and communities, and preserve the integrity of the federal highway.
This was followed by the emergency repair of a collapsed section of a two-cell pipe culvert and concrete-lined drain at Sauke Village (Chainage CH 162+000), which has restored hydraulic capacity, reduced flood risks, improved road safety and ensured uninterrupted movement of people, goods and services.
The Honourable Minister of Works, Engr. David Nweze Umahi, CON, FNSE, FNATE, who was represented at the event by the Bauchi State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Umar Saidu, described the interventions as transformative. He said the projects would bring lasting relief to affected communities, prevent recurring flood damage and enhance socio-economic development in Bauchi State and the wider North-East region. He also called for sustained collaboration among stakeholders to ensure the durability of the projects.
Providing technical details, the Federal Controller of Works in Bauchi State, Engineer Bashiru Adamu, explained that the projects are part of the 260 emergency interventions initiated by the current administration to address critical infrastructure failures nationwide. He noted that the Bauchi–Gombe Road rehabilitation and the emergency drainage works along the Bauchi–Potiskum corridor were designed to mitigate flooding, protect federal assets and reduce the impact of climate change on road infrastructure.
He stressed that culverts and concrete-lined drains are critical hydraulic structures that ensure roads, farmlands and communities remain safe and accessible.
In separate remarks, officials of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) and the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Bauchi Branch, commended the Federal Government for its timely response to infrastructure challenges and adherence to professional standards. They highlighted the strategic importance of the Bauchi–Gombe and Bauchi–Potiskum corridors to regional connectivity and economic growth, while urging host communities to support government efforts through environmental protection measures.
Also speaking, the Project Manager of Triacta (Nigeria) Limited, Mr. Joseph Samaha, assured that rehabilitation works on the Bauchi–Gombe Road are progressing according to schedule. He confirmed that drainage construction, binder courses and asphalt surfacing are ongoing, with full completion expected within the year.
Speaking on behalf of the host communities, the Head of Sauke Village, Mallam Zakari Ya’u, expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for the emergency interventions, noting that the projects have ended years of flooding, protected farmlands and improved access for residents. He pledged the community’s commitment to safeguarding the infrastructure to ensure its long-term benefits.
