Drunk Policeman Attached To Justice Shoots Boy Dead
Inspector Ayeni Adeolu, Nigerian police officer has admitted to shooting an errand boy dead in Lagos State while allegedly under the influence of alcohol, claiming the fatal shot was a mistake and meant to be a warning fired into the air.
In a video, Inspector Adeolu confessed to killing the young man, whom he described as someone who had done nothing to provoke the attack. The shooting occurred in Ikeja, Lagos State, near the home of Justice Ramon Oshodi, to whom the officer is reportedly attached for personal protection.P
In the video, the officer said: “My name is Ayeni Adeolu and I am working for Justice Oshodi here in Lagos State, Ikeja. I would like to explain why I killed him because he didn’t do anything for me to warrant [it]. As I was coming back from work, I was stopped and they offered alcohol and I bought it—that is, the sachet one—and drank it. Then I asked him if he was not intoxicated and he said yes, then I finished drinking.”
He continued, explaining how the situation escalated: “Then after some seconds I saw him dragging an issue with someone. And I have already told him that if he has any issues with anybody, he should let me know—that I will take care of it as a police officer. As I was there, I saw someone chasing him, he came running to me and I interfered by telling the person chasing him to calm down and then I fired a gun and it mistakenly hit him. I am also surprised that he was hit at his chest because my intention was to shoot at the sky, not to aim at anyone.”
A source close to the scene of the incident confirmed the officer’s account, alleging that the shooting happened shortly after the officer consumed alcohol given to him by the now-deceased young man.
“A police inspector, Ayeni Adeolu, attached to Justice Oshodi Ramon under Ikeja Constituenc
y, shot his street errand boy on his way to work in Lagos.
He was on his way to work when he saw the boy where they were selling “hot drinks” and the boy offered him a sachet of Chelsea drink, which he couldn’t resist. In the process of drinking, some set of guys came to attack the boy, who is the deceased,” the source.
“He tried to talk to them not to fight his boy but they refused to listen to him because he was not in uniform.
In the process of cautioning them not to fight and they failed to listen to him, he decided to warm up the air with his service pistol, and the bullet mistakenly hit the errand boy on the chest, and he died instantly.”
A disturbing part of the video shows the errand boy lying in a pool of his own blood, while the visibly distraught police officer clutched his chest.
As of the time of filing this report, the police authorities in Lagos have yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
