Presidency Fires Back At Kukah Over 2023 Election Peace Accords

The Presidency has clarified that President Bola Tinubu signed both peace accords ahead of the 2023 presidential election, responding to comments made by Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah.

Kukah, the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, claimed during the Edo Election Townhall meeting in Benin that Tinubu had not signed the peace accord.

In a statement on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, refuted the claim.

Onanuga explained that Tinubu signed both accords, which were designed to ensure peaceful and credible elections.

“The first accord, committing the candidates to a free and credible election, was signed on September 29, 2022, with Vice President Kashim Shettima representing Tinubu,” Onanuga stated.

He further clarified that the second accord, aimed at ensuring candidates accepted the election outcomes, was signed by Tinubu himself on February 23, 2023.

This clarification reinforces the President’s commitment to peaceful democratic processes during the 2023 election season.
