ADC Blasts APC-Led Senate Over Electoral Act Amendments

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has strongly condemned the decision of the APC-led 10th Senate to reject key electoral reforms, describing the move as a deliberate attempt to undermine Nigeria’s democracy ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of using its majority in the National Assembly to weaken the Electoral Act and create fresh opportunities for election rigging.
The ADC particularly faulted the Senate’s rejection of provisions for the electronic transmission of election results, the electronic download of voter cards, and the decision to shorten election notice periods as well as reduce the timeline for the publication of candidates’ lists from 150 days to 60 days.
According to the party, the rejected amendments were designed to enhance transparency, improve the efficiency of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and restore public confidence in the electoral process.
The opposition party argued that the Senate’s action reflects the ruling party’s fear of free, fair, and credible elections, despite its current political dominance. It warned that the changes would place unnecessary logistical pressure on INEC and further weaken the integrity of future elections.
Describing the development as retrogressive, the ADC called on Nigerians to reject what it termed “legislative tampering” with electoral laws. The party also urged the Conference Committee on the Electoral Act to overturn the Senate’s decisions and pass amendments that align with democratic principles and the will of the Nigerian people.
