Ministry of Interior Organises Fire Safety Training and Drill for Staff

The Ministry of Interior has organized a comprehensive Fire Safety Training and Drill for its staff as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen workplace safety, emergency preparedness, and disaster response within the Ministry.

The exercise, which featured both theoretical and practical sessions, was conducted in collaboration with professional fire safety officers and emergency response personnel.

The training aimed to sensitize staff on fire prevention, safety awareness, and effective response mechanisms in the event of a fire outbreak or related emergencies.

In her opening remarks, the Director of the Joint Services Department, Hajiya Adaji Asmau, welcomed participants and emphasized the importance of preparedness in mitigating fire-related incidents. She noted that the training was designed to equip staff with the knowledge and practical skills required to respond effectively to fire emergencies.

According to her, many fire-related fatalities are not caused directly by flames but by smoke inhalation, panic, and a lack of proper response procedures. She therefore urged staff to pay close attention to the training, stressing that awareness and preparedness remain critical in preventing and managing fire incidents.

The lead facilitator, while introducing members of the fire safety team, explained that the lecture focused on three key stages of fire management: what to do before a fire outbreak, actions to take during a fire incident, and the necessary procedures after a fire has been contained. He encouraged participants to engage actively and ask questions in order to maximize the benefits of the training.

During the session, the facilitators highlighted key aspects of basic fire safety and emergency procedures, including fire prevention, fire protection, fire preparedness, and firefighting techniques. Staff were also educated on common causes of fire outbreaks and the importance of early detection, prompt reporting, and the proper use of fire safety equipment.

The practical component of the exercise provided participants with demonstrations on how to respond during fire emergencies and how to safely use firefighting equipment to control small fire incidents before they escalate.

The Ministry reiterated its commitment to maintaining a safe working environment and strengthening institutional capacity for emergency response. Staff were encouraged to apply the knowledge gained not only within the workplace but also in their homes and communities.

The training forms part of the Ministry’s broader initiative to promote safety awareness, risk management, and proactive disaster preparedness across its departments and agencies.
