FMC Abuja Breaks Silence On Death Of Ifunanya Nwagene Following Snake Bite

The management of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abuja, has issued a clarification regarding the death of Ms. Ifunanya Lucy Nwagene, who reportedly died from complications arising from a snake bite on January 31, 2026.

In a statement signed by the Head of Clinical Services, Dr. Bioku Muftau, the hospital expressed deep condolences to the family of the deceased, describing the loss as tragic and deeply painful.

According to the statement, Ms. Nwagene was promptly attended to upon arrival at the facility. Medical personnel reportedly commenced immediate resuscitative measures, including the administration of intravenous fluids, intranasal oxygen, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and polyvalent anti-snake venom.
The hospital explained that a rapid clinical assessment revealed that the patient had suffered severe neurotoxic complications resulting from the snake bite. Despite efforts to stabilize her condition and prepare her for transfer to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), her health reportedly deteriorated suddenly shortly before the transfer could be completed.
“Intensive life-saving measures were instituted immediately, including CPR,” the statement read. “Unfortunately, despite the dedication and expertise of the medical team, the patient could not be revived.”

FMC Abuja firmly refuted allegations circulating on social media suggesting that antivenom was unavailable or that there was a delayed response to the emergency. The management described such claims as unfounded and misleading, stressing that they do not reflect the true events surrounding the case.

The hospital reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, transparency, and quality patient care, noting that its staff continues to uphold high clinical standards in the delivery of healthcare services.

The statement concluded with an appeal to members of the public to rely on credible and verified sources of information, rather than social media speculation, while assuring that the hospital remains open to inquiries and further clarification.
