BREAKING: Fresh Blow To PDP As Another Governor Defects
Stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bauchi State have begun fresh consultations over their political future following indications that Governor Bala Mohammed may soon defect from the party.
The development comes amid reported moves by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to attract the governor and his supporters, Naija News House gathered.
The decision to initiate consultations was reached on Saturday during a closed-door meeting held at the Government House banquet hall in Bauchi, a move that has heightened uncertainty among party supporters in the state.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, the State Chairman of the PDP, Samaila Adamu Burga, said no final decision had been made. However, he acknowledged what he described as a āthin possibilityā of aligning with another political platform.
Burga disclosed that several political parties have already approached the Bauchi PDP, seeking to bring Governor Bala Mohammed and his supporters into their fold.
He explained that a newly constituted committee has been tasked with engaging all interested parties and evaluating their proposals before making recommendations to stakeholders.
According to him, the committee will consult widely with relevant stakeholders both within and outside the state to ensure that any eventual decision reflects a broad consensus.
Burga noted that the move became necessary due to current challenges within the party but maintained that the PDP remains strong and continues to enjoy significant support across Bauchi State.
The committee is chaired by the Deputy Governor, Auwal Mohammed Jatau, and includes key party figures such as the Deputy National Chairman of the Turaki-led PDP, Hamza Koshe Akuyam; former Deputy Governor, Baba Tela; Senator Bala Kariya; Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abubakar Y. Suleiman; Hajiya Amina Mohammed Katagum; PDP Chairman, Samaila Adamu Burga; and Garba Mohammed Noma. The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Aminu Hammayo, will serve as secretary of the committee.
Burga added that consultations are ongoing and that stakeholders will reconvene after the process to decide the partyās next political direction. He expressed optimism that a final decision would be reached within the next week, noting that all actions would be guided by electoral laws and the timetable set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
