BREAKING: Gunmen Attack Enugu Market, Kill Soldier, Other Personnel Flee

A soldier has been killed by unknown gunmen during an attack on the New Artisan Market in Enugu State.

The market known as “Hausa Market” is located in the Abakpa area of Enugu, the state capital.

It was gathered that the deceased, Aaharif Ibrahim from Borno State was killed on Wednesday evening during an ambush on a military vehicle in the market.

The slain soldier from 82 Division was part of a special operation, which is battling to contend with deadly Biafra agitation in the country’s South-East.

A source said the hoodlums, who were masked, stormed the market predominantly by northerners and opened fire on the military vehicle.

“Our brother and colleague was killed yesterday by alleged IPOB members during an ambush on personnel in Artisan Market, a Hausa market in Abakpa,” a source said.

“He was shot dead while other personnel ran for their lives.”

Security has deteriorated in the South-East with frequent attacks by armed persons in recent times.

Anambra, Imo and Enugu states have witnessed some of the deadly attacks in the region.

Aside from government officials and facilities, the military and officials of other security agencies have been targets of attacks by gunmen in the South-East.

The Nigerian government has accused pro-Biafra group, IPOB of being responsible for the deadly attacks in the region.

But the group has repeatedly denied its involvement in the attacks.
