BREAKING: Many Feared Killed, Houses Burnt As Gunmen Attack Plateau Community On New Year’s Eve
Gunmen suspected to be Fulani militia on Wednesday night attacked the Bum community in Chugwi, Vwang District of Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, killing at least seven people, injuring several others, and setting houses ablaze.
The attack occurred late on December 31, 2025, while residents were observing crossover night to usher in the New Year. The sudden assault threw the community into chaos, fear, and mourning.
Confirming the incident in a statement on Thursday, the National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youths Moulder-Association (BYM), Rwang Tengwong, said the attackers took advantage of the New Year celebrations to carry out the deadly operation.
“While the world welcomed the New Year in celebration, residents of Bum community in Chugwi, Vwang District of Jos South Local Government Area, Plateau State, were plunged into mourning following a deadly attack by suspected armed Fulani militants,” Tengwong stated.
He explained that the attack occurred at about 11:00 p.m. on December 31, barely moments into the New Year, as residents were preparing to bid farewell to 2025 and welcome 2026.
“As of this morning, seven corpses have been recovered, while search and rescue efforts are still ongoing. This raises fears that the casualty figure may increase,” he added.
Tengwong expressed concern that the attack took place despite earlier security alerts warning that some communities in Jos South Local Government Area were at risk of possible attacks. He alleged that the warnings were ignored by security agencies.
“Sadly, the Bum community has now fallen victim to this renewed wave of violence. This attack adds to the growing list of assaults on innocent rural communities in Plateau State, deepening concerns over the safety of lives and property, especially during festive periods meant for peace and celebration,” he said.
He noted that the Berom Youths Moulder-Association is closely monitoring the situation and will provide further updates as events unfold.
In a related development, residents of Ipele community in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State were also thrown into panic on Thursday after suspected terrorists attacked and set a police station in the area ablaze.
Information gathered revealed that the attack occurred in the early hours of January 1, 2026, with the assailants targeting the police facility and burning it down. The incident forced many residents to flee their homes and go into hiding as fear spread across the community.
