Gov Umo Eno Lauds Philanthropy As Osung Hands Over Ultra-Modern Health Facility
Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has commended Engineer Elvis Osung for his outstanding philanthropic gesture in constructing and donating a fully equipped modern health centre to the Akwa Ibom State Government.
The ultra-modern facility, located in Udung Affiang, Okobo Local Government Area, was built through the Grace Efiong Osung Foundation to serve residents of the host community and neighbouring local government areas, including Urue Offong/Oruko and Nsit Ubium.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the Governor—represented by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Ekem Emmanuel John—directed the Executive Secretary of the Akwa Ibom State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Mrs. Enobong Attah, to immediately enroll the centre under the National Basic Health Care Provision Fund to ensure effective service delivery and sustainability.
Governor Eno emphasized that the name Grace Efiong Osung Health Centre must remain unchanged, explaining that it honours the memory of Engr. Osung’s late mother and stands as a lasting legacy of compassion and selfless service to humanity.
Dr. Ekem urged traditional birth attendants in the area to refer pregnant women to the facility to enable them receive professional maternal and child healthcare services. He also disclosed that retired medical doctors recently engaged on contract, alongside other healthcare workers, would be deployed to the centre, adding that full operations are expected to commence on January 2, 2026.
The Governor further directed the Executive Chairman of Okobo Local Government Area to provide adequate security for the health centre to safeguard personnel, patients, and equipment. He also appealed to the host community to take full ownership of the facility, protect it, and ensure its proper use, stressing that the centre is a shared asset meant to serve the entire people.
According to him, the success of the health centre depends not only on government support but also on the vigilance, care, and cooperation of the local residents. He urged the community to embrace the facility, promote good health practices, and uphold it as a source of pride for Okobo Local Government Area.
The health centre is equipped with modern medical facilities, including a pharmacy, laboratory, labour ward, consulting rooms, male and female wards, a nurses’ station, and residential lodges for medical personnel. With a 10-bed capacity, the facility is expected to significantly reduce the need for residents to travel long distances to access quality healthcare.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the Grace Efiong Osung Foundation, Engr. Elvis Osung, described the health centre as a living tribute to his late mother, Grace Efiong Osung, whose life, he said, was marked by faith, love, sacrifice, and service to humanity.
Earlier, the Chancellor of the foundation, Dr. Monday E. Dickson, noted that beyond healthcare, Engr. Osung has remained committed to social development. He revealed that in the past three years, the philanthropist has awarded educational grants to deserving students across the five local government areas of Oro Nation, organized free medical outreach programmes, and honoured top JAMB scorers in Akwa Ibom State with special educational awards.
The event climaxed with the official commissioning of the facility, followed by a guided tour by dignitaries and guests to inspect the state-of-the-art amenities and assess the centre’s readiness for operation.
