BREAKING: Heavy Gunshots As Boko Haram Fighters Attack Nigerian Military Base
Troops of the Nigerian Army, 114 Battalion (Motorised), under Operation Hadin Kai, have repelled an attack by Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists on their location in Bitta, Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State.
The attack, which occurred late on Saturday night, was launched by the terrorists from the direction of the troops’ defensive position.
Security sources said the soldiers responded with firepower and engaged the attackers in a prolonged gun battle.
“The troops engaged the attackers in a sustained firefight and repelled them,” the source said.
The source claimed no casualties were recorded on the part of the troops, but one of the terrorists was killed, and an AK-47 rifle was recovered after the exchange.
The Commander of 26 Task Force Brigade, Brigadier General Nura Abdullahi, visited the troops in Bitta on Sunday to assess the security situation and commend the personnel for their bravery.
Similarly, the Acting General Officer Commanding 7 Division and Commander, Sector 1 of Operation Hadin Kai, Brigadier General U.V. Unachukwu, also visited the brigade headquarters.
He met with the brigade commander, the commanding officer of 114 Battalion, and frontline troops during a briefing and directed immediate deployment of personnel to reinforce the battalion’s defensive lines and resume full operations.
Many residents of Bitta have now fled to Gwoza town due to recurring attacks in the area.
Though the situation in Bitta was said to be calm as of Sunday, sources described the security outlook as highly unpredictable.
