The central defender played for some of the biggest clubs in France, Italy, England and Serbia.
Taribo West no doubt is the most successful Nigerian defender that played in Europe but his success story about how he lived the dream is something to write home about.
The former Nigerian international said he ran away from his father’s house after being told he was going to be a roadside mechanic.

The center-half fled home from his base at Port-Harcourt all the way down to Lagos in a quest to achieve his dreams as a footballer.
Taribo West left Port-Harcourt to Lagos to pursue his dreams after his father wanted him to become a mechanic.
He went on to play 42 times for Nigeria including making an appearance at the France 98′ World Cup as well as AFCON 2000 and 2002 tournaments respectively.
Taribo was recently honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award by Our Moment Newspaper as he narrated his success story quoted by Vanguard: “My journey to being a world-famous soccer player wasn’t easy.
The war started right from my father’s house in far-away Port Harcourt, some decades ago. My father actually wanted me to be a roadside mechanic.
“My mother resisted strongly. She begged and begged him to allow me have, at least, a secondary school education, but he refused.
“The struggle led me to running away from my father’s house in Port Harcourt, many years ago, at a very tender age, to Lagos, and there started my struggles.”
Taribo played for some of the best sides in Europe including Ligue 1 outfit Auxerre, Serie A giants Inter Milan and AC Milan, Premier League side Derby County, Bundesliga club Kaiserslautern, among others.
He won the Ligue 1 title with Auxerre, the UEFA Cup with Inter in the 1997-98 season and the Olympic gold medal with Nigeria in Atlanta 96.
The Genk striker grabbed his first international goal in an international friendly helping Nigeria defeat the Pharaohs of Egypt 1-0 on March 26, 2019.
