UK Summons Iranian Envoy Over Alleged Spy Plot
The United Kingdom has summoned Iran’s ambassador to London, Seyed Ali Mousavi, over what it described as Tehran’s “reckless and destabilising actions” both within Britain and internationally.
In a statement issued on Monday, the UK Foreign Office said the diplomatic move followed the recent prosecution of two individuals under the country’s National Security Act for allegedly assisting a foreign intelligence service.
Authorities identified the suspects as Nematollah Shahsavani, 40, and Alireza Farasati, 22.
Both men appeared before a London court last week on allegations of conducting surveillance operations targeting members of the Jewish community.
According to prosecutor Louise Attrill, the defendants were “suspected of assisting the Iranian intelligence service by conducting hostile surveillance of locations and individuals linked to the Israeli and Jewish community,” including reconnaissance of a synagogue.
British security agencies, including the domestic intelligence service MI5, have repeatedly warned of an escalating threat linked to Iran, particularly amid ongoing tensions involving the United States and Israel.
In a related development, UK police disclosed that an Iranian national and a Romanian woman were arrested for attempting to gain access to the HM Naval Base Clyde, a high-security military facility that houses Britain’s Trident nuclear submarines.
While the Iranian suspect has been released pending further investigation, prosecutors confirmed that no immediate charges would be pursued against the Romanian woman, though the case remains open.
British authorities have raised concerns that the country could become a potential target due to its strategic alignment with the United States and Israel, particularly after granting US forces access to military bases for operations described by officials as “defensive.”
The UK government reiterated its commitment to national security, warning that it would continue to expose and counter foreign threats on its soil.
