Many Causalities As Explosion Rocks Iranian Port City

A massive explosion and fire at the Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas have left over 100 people injured.

The Iranian emergency services stated that at least 115 people were injured in the explosion.

Shahid Rajaei Port, where the incident occurred, mainly handles container traffic and also has oil tanks and other petrochemical facilities.

The port is located more than 1,000 km (620 miles) south of the capital, Tehran, according to officials and state media.

Quoting a statement by Iran’s customs authority, Al Jazeera reported that Saturday’s explosion occurred in the Sina container yard, which is affiliated with the Ports and Maritime Organisation.

Mehrdad Hassanzadeh, the Director of Hormozgan province’s crisis management organization, told state television:.”The injured have been transferred to medical facilities.”

He added that safety officials had previously visited the site and issued safety warnings.

Earlier, Hormozgan Ports and Maritime Administration official Esmaeil Malekizadeh said: “The explosion took place near the Shahid Rajaei port dock.”

The cause of the explosion remains unclear as of the time of filing this report.
