APC Sets Tough Condition For Kwankwaso’s Return To APC

Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and ex-Governor of Kano State, has publicly acknowledged that the party has no objection to former Kano State Governor and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s reported intention to rejoin the APC. However, Ganduje made it clear that Kwankwaso must meet a crucial condition before his return is formally accepted.

Kwankwaso, a prominent political figure in Kano and one of the founding members of the APC, left the party years ago to pursue alternative political interests. His return has been widely anticipated within political circles, stirring discussions about its potential impact on Kano State politics and the broader Nigerian political landscape.

No Objection to Kwankwaso’s Return — With Conditions

Speaking to journalists recently, Ganduje expressed that while the APC remains open to Kwankwaso’s comeback, the party expects full compliance with certain established protocols. He stressed that these conditions are not meant to alienate the former governor but to ensure party cohesion and discipline.

“The APC has no objection to Senator Kwankwaso’s desire to return. However, any member, regardless of their stature, must respect the party’s constitution, uphold its values, and abide by the rules that govern our collective progress,” Ganduje stated.

The former Kano governor further elaborated that the “powerful condition” Kwankwaso must accept centers around demonstrating loyalty to the APC and embracing the party’s unity agenda. This includes openly committing to work within the party’s framework and supporting its elected candidates.

Political Reconciliation and Unity: The APC’s Priority

Ganduje’s remarks come amid heightened calls for reconciliation within the APC, especially in Kano State where internal divisions have sometimes weakened the party’s influence. Kwankwaso’s reentry is seen by many as an opportunity to heal old wounds and unify key stakeholders ahead of upcoming elections.

The APC leadership is keen on maintaining a united front against opposition parties, particularly the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which has historically been strong in the northern states. Kwankwaso’s political weight and grassroots connections are viewed as valuable assets that could help consolidate APC’s dominance in Kano and beyond.

Kwankwaso’s Political Journey: From APC Founder to Opposition

Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso is a seasoned politician with a career spanning several decades. As a founding member of the APC, he played a critical role in the party’s emergence as Nigeria’s dominant political force. However, internal disagreements and leadership tussles led to his exit from the APC some years ago.

Since leaving, Kwankwaso has remained an influential figure in Kano politics, occasionally aligning with opposition groups and advocating for alternative governance models. His potential return signals a shift that could redefine political alliances in the region.

    Implications for Kano State Politics

Kano State, one of Nigeria’s most populous and politically significant regions, has often been a battleground for major parties. The return of Kwankwaso to the APC could reshape the political calculus in the state, especially with elections approaching at various levels.

Analysts suggest that if Kwankwaso embraces Ganduje’s conditions, it could herald a new era of collaboration between two powerful political actors, potentially bridging divides that have fragmented the APC base in Kano.

“Their cooperation could be a game-changer. With both Ganduje and Kwankwaso working together under the APC banner, the party stands a stronger chance of mobilizing grassroots support and delivering electoral victories,” said a political commentator.

    Challenges and Opportunities Ahead

While Kwankwaso’s return is welcomed in principle, some party members remain cautious, emphasizing the need for genuine reconciliation rather than mere political expediency. The APC leadership will need to manage internal sensitivities and ensure that the reintegration process fosters trust and transparency.

Moreover, Kwankwaso’s acceptance of the party’s conditions will likely be closely scrutinized by both supporters and critics. His ability to navigate this transition without reigniting past tensions will be critical to the success of his comeback.

On the other hand, the move also presents significant opportunities for the APC. Strengthened by Kwankwaso’s experience and political networks, the party can present a more united and formidable front in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections.

Ganduje’s Role in Smoothing the Way

Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, with his extensive political experience and influence, appears positioned to play a pivotal role in ensuring a smooth reconciliation process. His willingness to publicly acknowledge Kwankwaso’s potential return and set clear expectations signals a pragmatic approach to party unity.

Observers note that Ganduje’s leadership style—combining firmness with openness—could help resolve lingering disputes and create an environment conducive to lasting peace within the APC.

The APC’s openness to Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s return, coupled with Ganduje’s insistence on adherence to party rules and loyalty, underscores a broader commitment to strengthening the party’s internal democracy and unity. As Nigeria’s political scene evolves, the successful reintegration of key figures like Kwankwaso will be instrumental in shaping the fortunes of the ruling party.

With the 2027 general elections on the horizon, all eyes will be on Kano State, where the political realignment between Ganduje and Kwankwaso could set the tone for wider national contests. Ultimately, the powerful condition laid out by Ganduje is not just a test for Kwankwaso but a reaffirmation of the principles that APC hopes will guide its future success.
