Mockery: Macron Fires Back At Trump Over Claims His Wife ‘Slaps’ And ‘Mistreats’ Him
French President, Emmanuel Macron, has broken his silence following mocking remarks by United States President Donald Trump describing the comments as lacking substance and refusing to be drawn into a war of words.
Macron spoke in French during an interview session broadcast by The Daily Letter on Thursday night, a clip of which was seen by SaharaReporters.
Responding indirectly to Trump’s controversial statements about his personal life, Macron said he would not engage with what he described as trivial and inappropriate commentary, stressing instead the urgency of global crises.
“Listen, I’m not going to respond. We talk about things that are too serious. We talk about war,” Macron said.
He continued by highlighting the human and economic toll of ongoing conflicts, noting that both Europeans and Americans are grappling with rising energy costs and instability.
“We talk today about women and men who are at war, about women and men and civilians who are killed… We also talk about the consequences of this war on our economies,” he said.
Macron added that the remarks attributed to Trump fell far below the standards expected of global leaders.
“The words that I was able to hear… are neither elegant nor up to the mark. So I’m not going to answer it. It doesn’t deserve an answer,” he said.
The French leader further called for de-escalation of conflicts in the Middle East, urging a ceasefire and renewed diplomatic negotiations to stabilise affected regions and restore global economic balance.
“What needs to be done is to act for the de-escalation, for a ceasefire, for the resumption of negotiations… it is all of us who are the victims of the consequences of this war,” Macron added.
Trump had earlier sparked outrage in a viral video, where he mocked Macron and made disparaging remarks about his wife, reviving a controversial 2025 incident that drew widespread attention.
During the speech, Trump claimed that Macron’s wife “treats him extremely badly” and referenced a moment he described as “the right to the jaw,” in an apparent allusion to a widely circulated video from May 2025.
The footage, recorded during an official visit to Hanoi, Vietnam, showed Brigitte Macron placing both hands on the president’s face in what some observers interpreted as a shove, triggering intense media speculation.
At the time, Macron dismissed the incident as harmless, insisting that he and his wife were merely joking, while the French presidency described it as a moment of “complicity” taken out of context.
Despite those clarifications, the episode has remained a recurring subject in political discourse, resurfacing periodically, most recently following Trump’s remarks.
Trump also used the opportunity to question France’s willingness to support international military operations, claiming that Macron declined a request to deploy naval assets to the Gulf region, an assertion that has not been independently verified.
