Major Roads Deserted, Schools, Businesses Closed As South-East Observes #FreeNnamdiKanuNow

Economic and social activities across Enugu State were brought to a halt on Monday as residents observed a total shutdown in solidarity with the #FreeNnamdiKanu protest.

The lockdown, declared by the Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC), was aimed at demanding the immediate release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

It was observed that petrol stations, shops, and markets were completely shut, while major roads remained deserted on Monday morning.

Only a handful of private vehicles and commercial tricycles were seen on the roads. The Enugu–Abakaliki Road, Enugu–Onitsha Expressway, and Enugu–Okigwe–Port Harcourt Highway were particularly affected, with virtually no vehicular movement recorded on these major routes.

The OYC described the shutdown as a “moral and patriotic duty” and a “peaceful declaration that the Igbo nation stands firmly with truth, justice, and the rule of law”.

The group emphasised that the shutdown is a non-violent expression of unity and conscience, aimed at highlighting the perceived injustice and marginalisation faced by the Igbo people.

The shutdown has significant implications for the state’s economy, with many businesses and traders likely to suffer losses. However, the OYC remains resolute in its demand for Kanu’s release, citing the need for justice and equality.
