Major Shake-Up In Tinubu’s Cabinet As Minister, Others Resigned

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has officially resigned his position in the cabinet of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. His resignation, effective March 30, 2026, comes as he prepares to contest the governorship of Bauchi State in the upcoming 2027 general elections.

The move follows a presidential directive requiring all political appointees with elective ambitions to step down. Tuggar, a seasoned diplomat and former Ambassador to Germany, is expected to return to his home state immediately to consolidate his political structure under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Since his appointment in August 2023, Ambassador Tuggar has been credited with modernizing Nigeria’s foreign policy through his signature 4D Doctrine: Democracy, Development, Demography, and Diaspora.
Key achievements of his tenure include:
Strategic Autonomy: Tuggar successfully navigated a complex global landscape, maintaining Nigeria’s “strategic autonomy” while strengthening ties with both Western powers and emerging economies in the Global South.

Economic Diplomacy: He was instrumental in facilitating high-level commercial agreements, most notably during the West Africa Economic Summit (WAES 2025), which focused on agro-industrial development and trade corridors.
Cultural Repatriation: Building on his previous work in Berlin, Tuggar continued to lead the charge for the return of Nigeria’s stolen heritage, overseeing the continued repatriation of the Benin Bronzes from various European nations.

Diaspora Engagement: Under his leadership, the Ministry launched the Nigerians in Diaspora Database, aimed at integrating the expertise and capital of Nigerians abroad into national development.
Citizen Diplomacy: He prioritized the welfare of Nigerians abroad, coordinating successful humanitarian evacuations from conflict zones and streamlining consular services through digital reforms.

This will not be Tuggar’s first foray into the Bauchi gubernatorial race; he previously contested for the seat in 2011 and 2015. Supporters suggest that his international exposure and performance as a minister have significantly boosted his profile, making him a formidable contender to lead the “Pearl of Tourism.”

President Tinubu is expected to announce a successor to the Foreign Affairs portfolio in the coming days as part of a broader cabinet reshuffle.

Naija News House had earlier reported that, special assistant to president on social media resigned.
