Many Feared Killed As Abia, Cross River Clash

At least six five persons were killed over the weekend when inter-boundary clashes between Isu community in Arochukwu Local Government area of Abia State and Ukwa Mbiabong Ukwa Eburutu community of Odukpani LGA, Cross River State, resurfaced.

The cause of the latest bloodletting has not been disclosed as of Monday morning when a confirmation of the casualties was made.

There have always been intermittent boundary clashes between these neighbouring communities, leaving scores of deaths in the last 10 years.

In the last six months, this would be the second time that the Ukwa community has been invaded, according to natives.

In May 2024, many Ukwa Mbiabong Ukwa natives were reportedly killed over ownership of sites where precious stones are reportedly found.

Sources in Mbiabong Ukwa, who confirmed the killings between Saturday and Sunday, alleged that suspected warlords from Isu community Arochukwu LGA first launched the attack on Saturday morning.

According to a youth leader, Willy Esara, “The invaders swooped on us on Saturday, killed our two men and critically injured ten others.”

Another source reported that the suspected warlords laid ambush on the villagers who were on their way to the farms.

“The attackers opened fire on the unsuspecting villagers, killing two men, Abi Effiong Oku and Inyang Nya Ewa, injuring many others. One of the deceased was beheaded,” he alleged.

The latest attack has left the community in a state of shock and fear, according to fleeing residents.

Police PRO, Irene Ugbo said they were yet to be briefed on the latest clash but that they will launch an investigation.

Calls to the state security adviser, Major General Obono Ubi, (retired), were not responded to.
