COAS Tasks AFCSC To Align Military Training With Evolving Security Threats

In a renewed drive to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture through professional military education and enhanced inter-service collaboration, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has charged the Armed Forces Command and Staff College (AFCSC), Jaji, to continuously align its training curriculum with the country’s evolving security realities.
The COAS gave the charge while receiving the Commandant of AFCSC, Air Vice Marshal Alfred Olugbenga Shogbanmu, on Wednesday, 5 February 2026, at the Army Headquarters, Abuja.
Lieutenant General Shaibu commended the Armed Forces Command and Staff College for its critical role in producing highly skilled and professional officers for the Armed Forces of Nigeria. He observed that the nation’s increasingly complex and dynamic security environment demands proactive institutional responses, including the recent establishment of a Western Theatre Command to effectively counter emerging threats.
The Army Chief stressed the need for adaptive, forward-looking training programmes that mirror operational realities and strengthen joint planning, coordination and execution across the Armed Forces. According to him, strategic military education remains a vital pillar in enhancing command efficiency and operational effectiveness nationwide.
He further reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s unwavering commitment to supporting AFCSC through sustained infrastructure development and capacity enhancement, describing the College as a key engine for the development of competent staff officers whose professionalism directly impacts national security outcomes. The COAS also commended the quality of graduates produced by the institution, noting their strategic relevance in strengthening command, control and coordination within the Armed Forces.
In his remarks, the Commandant of AFCSC, Air Vice Marshal Alfred Olugbenga Shogbanmu, expressed appreciation for the consistent support of the Nigerian Army, particularly in the establishment of a simulation centre and the rehabilitation of critical facilities, which have significantly improved training outcomes and the overall learning environment.
He reaffirmed the College’s commitment to continually refining its academic and professional programmes in line with contemporary security demands, while deepening inter-agency cooperation to enhance joint operational effectiveness.
