COAS Urges Troops On Plateau To Remain Disciplined, Says Their Role Is Critical To National Stability

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has charged troops of 3 Division, Nigerian Army, to remain disciplined, committed and professional, stressing that their operations in Plateau State are critical to Nigeria’s national stability.

The COAS gave the charge on Monday, 19 January 2026, during an operational visit to the Headquarters of 3 Division Nigerian Army in Jos.

Addressing officers and soldiers, Lieutenant General Shaibu emphasised that discipline remains the bedrock of the military profession, noting that service in the Nigerian Army is voluntary and founded on the noble responsibility of defending the nation’s territorial integrity.

He disclosed that he had received detailed briefings from the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 3 Division, on the operational and welfare challenges facing the troops, adding that the most pressing concerns had already been addressed.

According to him, Army Headquarters is providing the necessary combat enablers to ensure personnel are adequately equipped to effectively discharge their duties. “The welfare of our troops remains a top priority. We will continue to provide the enabling environment for you to do your job properly,” the COAS assured.

Lieutenant General Shaibu urged young soldiers to respect the chain of command and draw guidance from their superiors, stressing that officers have a responsibility to mentor subordinates towards fulfilling their duties and building successful military careers.

He also charged troops to maintain high standards of physical fitness and mental alertness, explaining that deliberate measures have been put in place to prepare personnel for the rigours of military service.

Highlighting the importance of leadership at all levels, the COAS described Senior Non-Commissioned Officers as the critical link between officers and soldiers, urging them to provide effective middle-level leadership and sound guidance.

On ongoing operations in Plateau State, he described the security situation as unique, assuring troops that Operation ENDURING PEACE (OPEP) is receiving adequate guidance and support to successfully achieve its mandate.

The Army Chief further encouraged personnel to channel their concerns and grievances through the appropriate chain of command, assuring them that such issues would be promptly addressed.

Reaffirming that the sacrifices of troops are recognised and appreciated by the nation, Lieutenant General Shaibu urged them to remain proud of their service and to continue to discharge their duties with professionalism and honour, in line with global best practices.

As part of his visit, the COAS commissioned two blocks of 30 flats for Non-Commissioned Officers and a separate block of residential accommodation for officers at Maxwell Khobe Cantonment, Jos, underscoring the Army’s ongoing commitment to improving the welfare and living conditions of its personnel.
