Eight Suspects Arrested as Navy Seizes Illegal Fuel in Rivers State
The Nigerian Navy has recorded a significant breakthrough in its ongoing anti-crude oil theft operations, intercepting a large consignment of illegally refined petroleum products and arresting eight suspects in Rivers State.
The operation, carried out under Operation Delta Sentinel, took place within the Degema, Ogbogoro, and Ogbologo axis following credible intelligence on illicit oil activities in the area.
Naval personnel attached to Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Pathfinder deployed an anti-crude oil theft patrol team, which successfully intercepted two wooden boats loaded with approximately 44,000 litres of suspected illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO).
During the raid, eight suspects linked to the illegal operation were apprehended, while several armed accomplices reportedly fled upon sighting the naval team.
The Navy confirmed that the arrested individuals and the seized products are currently in custody and will be handed over to relevant authorities for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The Service noted that the operation aligns with the directive of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, who has tasked commanders to intensify efforts against crude oil theft, illegal bunkering, and other maritime crimes.
Reaffirming its commitment, the Nigerian Navy stated it will continue to sustain the momentum of Operation Delta Sentinel through intelligence-driven operations, increased patrols, and stronger inter-agency collaboration aimed at protecting Nigeria’s economic assets and maritime environment.
