Marriage Turns Deadly: Newlywed Woman Poisons Husband

The Nigerian police, Jigawa State Command has confirmed the arrest of a newly wedded woman for allegedly poisoning her husband to death in what police described as a tragic case linked to forced marriage.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Shiisu Lawan Adam, disclosed this in a statement, saying the incident occurred on January 23, at Gauza village in the Jahun Local Government Area of the state.

According to him, the deceased “took his lunch at home prepared by his wife and shortly after fell seriously ill.” “He was rushed to the hospital for medical attention but was unfortunately pronounced dead while receiving treatment,” SP Shiisu said.

He added that detectives from the Jahun Divisional Police Headquarters swung into action following the incident and arrested the wife as the principal suspect. “During interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to poisoning her husband’s food with rat poison,” the police spokesman stated.

SP Shiisu further revealed that the suspect admitted sending her cousin to purchase the rat poison used in committing the act. “The suspect also stated that she was forced into the marriage by her parents, a situation she claimed pushed her into the action,” he said.

According to the police, the Commissioner of Police has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Dutse for a comprehensive investigation.

“Upon conclusion of the investigation, the suspect will be charged to court for prosecution,” SP Shiisu added. He urged members of the public to seek lawful means of resolving family and marital disputes, warning that taking the law into one’s hands often leads to irreversible consequences.

“The command remains committed to the protection of lives and property and will ensure justice is served in this case,” the police spokesman said.
