Nigeria And Ghana: A Shared Democratic Legacy And Enduring Partnership As Ghana Marks Its 69th Independence Anniversary

The Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, OON, extends warm congratulations to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Ghana, Honourable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa on the occasion of the country’s 69th Independence Anniversary.

This historic milestone commemorates Ghana’s independence on the 6th of March in 1957, when it became the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to achieve freedom from colonial rule. Ghana’s independence represented a defining moment in Africa’s liberation movement, inspiring generations of African nations including Nigeria to pursue sovereignty, dignity, and self-determination. The Federal Government of Nigeria therefore joins the people of Ghana in celebrating this remarkable chapter in African history and in recognising Ghana’s enduring contributions to democratic governance, regional integration, and peaceful development on the continent of Africa.

Nigeria and Ghana share a unique and deeply rooted relationship founded on common historical experiences, cultural affinity, and shared aspirations for peace, prosperity, and African unity. Both nations have remained pillars of stability and democratic progress in West Africa and have consistently worked together in advancing the goals of regional cooperation within the Economic Community of West African States, the African Union, and the United Nations.

Over the decades, Nigeria and Ghana have built strong diplomatic ties characterized by frequent high-level engagements, strategic dialogue, and collaboration in areas including trade and investment, education, energy, defence cooperation, migration management, and cultural exchange. The movement of people between both countries, supported by regional free movement frameworks, has strengthened people-to-people diplomacy and fostered vibrant economic and cultural connections that reflect the spirit of African brotherhood.

Nigeria also acknowledges Ghana’s role in promoting democratic governance and regional stability. Both countries have historically cooperated in peacekeeping operations, mediation efforts, and conflict-prevention initiatives across the West African sub-region, demonstrating a shared commitment to safeguarding peace and democratic values. Therefore, as Ghana celebrates its independence this year under the theme ā€œBuilding Prosperity, Restoring Hope,ā€ Nigeria commends the resilience, creativity, and determination of the Ghanaian people in advancing national development and strengthening democratic institutions. Nigeria equally recognizes Ghana’s rich cultural heritage and the ongoing celebration of Heritage Month, which showcases the country’s vibrant traditions, creative industries, and cultural identity.

The Government of Nigeria reaffirms its commitment to further strengthening bilateral relations with Ghana through expanded economic cooperation, enhanced diplomatic consultation, and deeper cultural and educational exchanges. Nigeria remains confident that the longstanding partnership between Abuja and Accra will continue to grow, contributing to regional prosperity, economic integration, and the shared vision of a peaceful and united Africa.

On this auspicious occasion, the Government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria convey their best wishes to the Government and people of Ghana for continued peace, democratic consolidation, and sustainable development.
