    Nigeria Mourns Victims

The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic collapse of the Rubaya Coltan Mine in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), which reportedly claimed more than 200 lives and left many others injured.

In a statement issued on behalf of the Government and people of Nigeria, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, OON, conveyed Nigeria’s heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of the DRC, particularly the families of those who lost their lives in the devastating incident.
Nigeria also expressed sympathy for the injured and affected communities, offering prayers for the speedy recovery of those receiving medical treatment.

The Federal Government noted with concern that the incident reportedly followed heavy rainfall and predominantly affected artisanal miners and residents in the area. It observed that the scale of the tragedy highlights the persistent humanitarian challenges faced by vulnerable communities in resource-rich regions, as well as the dangers associated with unsafe and informal mining practices.

Nigeria reaffirmed its solidarity with the Democratic Republic of the Congo and commended the efforts of local authorities and emergency responders for their work in recovering victims, providing medical assistance to the injured, and safeguarding affected populations.

The Government of Nigeria stated that its thoughts and prayers remain with the Government and people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo during this period of national mourning.

The statement was signed by the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, anipr.
