Troops of the Nigerian Army under 3 Division/Joint Task Force Operation ENDURING PEACE (JTF OPEP) have foiled a planned attack by bandits in Plateau State, neutralising five of the criminals and recovering arms and ammunition.
The operation was carried out as part of ongoing efforts to deny bandits and other criminal elements freedom of action within the Joint Operations Area (JOA) under Operation PEACE SHIELD. According to military sources, the troops conducted sustained offensive operations following credible intelligence.
In the early hours of 1 January 2026, troops laid an intelligence-led ambush after bandits were observed mobilising from Dutsen Zaki towards Odare Forest in Wase Local Government Area of Plateau State. The bandits were reportedly planning to attack neighbouring communities in the area.
During the ensuing firefight, five bandits were neutralised, while several others fled the scene with possible gunshot injuries. Items recovered from the criminals include two AK-47 rifle magazines containing 11 rounds of 7.62mm (Special) ammunition, two machetes and one knife. Troops are currently conducting follow-up operations to track down the fleeing bandits.
The General Officer Commanding 3 Division Nigerian Army and Commander of the Joint Task Force Operation ENDURING PEACE, Major General EF Oyinlola, assured law-abiding residents of Plateau State and other Areas of Responsibility (AOR) of the military’s continued commitment to safeguarding lives and property. He also urged members of the public to support security agencies by providing timely and credible information.
Meanwhile, criminals operating within the Joint Operations Area have been warned to desist from all illegal activities or face decisive military action, as troops remain alert and ready to respond to any threats to peace and stability in Plateau State.
