Police Block SSANU, NASU From Leaving Protest Venue In Abuja

Some members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (SANU) on Wednesday gathered at the Unity Fountain for a national protest.

The protest followed a two-week ultimatum given in June to the Federal Government to meet their demands.

The protesters were gathered at the Unity Fountain, in Federal Capital Territory brandishing placards with different inscriptions.

However, security operatives have prevented the protesters from leaving the premises.

The unions are demanding the payment of their four-month salary which was withheld due to the industrial action of 2022.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, SSANU and NASU embarked on a prolonged strike in 2022. While the ASUU strike lasted eight months, SSANU and NASU had a four-month strike.

Following the directive of President Bola Tinubu that the affected staff members be paid four-month salaries, SSANU and NASU members claimed the wages were not paid, while ASUU members were paid.

The NASU and SSANU unions, to press home their demands, instructed their members to stage a nationwide protest on July 9 across all state chapters, with a follow-up national protest scheduled for Abuja today, as stated in a circular addressed to all branch chairmen of the respective unions.

The circular was co-signed by the General Secretary of NASU, Peters Adeyemi, and the National President of SSANU, Mohammed Ibrahim.
