The Federal Government of Nigeria has issued a safety advisory to Nigerians residing in the Islamic Republic of Iran and neighbouring Gulf countries following escalating military actions in the Middle East.
In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government said it is closely monitoring the volatile situation arising from reported military strikes carried out by Israel and the United States on targets in Iran, as well as retaliatory actions allegedly launched by Iran against certain locations in some Gulf states.
Describing the situation as tense and unpredictable, the Ministry urged Nigerian citizens in the affected regions to exercise extreme caution and prioritise their safety.
Nigerians in Iran and impacted Gulf countries—including Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia—have been advised to remain constantly vigilant and aware of their surroundings. They were specifically cautioned to avoid strategic, military, and government installations which could become flashpoints in the unfolding crisis.
The government also strongly recommended limiting non-essential travel and movement until the security situation becomes clearer. Citizens were urged to steer clear of large gatherings and public demonstrations.
Additionally, Nigerians abroad were advised to strictly comply with all directives issued by local authorities and security agencies, stressing that cooperation with law enforcement is essential for personal safety during periods of instability.
The Ministry further encouraged citizens to stay informed through credible international and local news outlets while avoiding misinformation. It also urged Nigerians to maintain communication with the nearest Nigerian embassies, noting that diplomatic missions in Tehran and other affected Gulf countries are on high alert to provide necessary consular assistance.
The Federal Government reassured the public that the safety and well-being of Nigerians abroad remain a top priority. It pledged to continue assessing the situation and provide further updates as developments unfold.
Meanwhile, Nigeria called on all parties involved in the conflict to embrace dialogue and de-escalate tensions in the interest of global peace, stability, and coexistence.
The statement was signed by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja.
