Nigeria Marks 30 Years Of Rights Defence: Ojukwu Urges Nationwide Action For Justice And Equality

    Tony Ojukwu

The Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Dr. Tony Ojukwu (OFR, SAN), has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to human rights protection as the Commission marked its 30th anniversary during the 2025 International Human Rights Day celebration in Abuja.

Welcoming partners, activists and dignitaries, Ojukwu described the milestone as both “a journey and a reaffirmation” of the Commission’s mandate since its establishment in 1995. The commemorative event featured a symbolic Walk for Human Rights to amplify the principles of freedom, equality and justice across the country.

He noted that the anniversary presented an opportunity to honour outstanding partners whose support has strengthened the Commission’s work over the years, emphasizing that progress in human rights requires collaboration at all levels of society.

Ojukwu stressed that Nigeria continues to face insecurity, economic strain and political challenges, but insisted that the NHRC remains “unwavering” in its mission to promote, protect and enforce the rights of all citizens.

“Our walk today is not rooted in protest, but in unity… to shape a Nigeria where every right is protected, every voice matters, and no one is left behind,” he said.

He added that human rights thrive in environments built on harmony, mutual respect and peaceful coexistence, and praised individuals and institutions being recognized for their consistent support to the Commission.

Recommitting the NHRC to its founding mandate, Ojukwu urged government institutions, the private sector and citizens to play active roles in safeguarding rights nationwide.

“Human rights must not remain aspirational ideals but daily realities,” he declared, calling for collective action to build a future where freedom, equality and justice are guaranteed for all Nigerians.

Ojukwu concluded with gratitude to partners and participants, noting that the Commission looks to the next decades with hope and renewed resolve.
