Don’t Divide Nigeria; Verify Before You Amplify, Tinubu Cautions Social Media Influencers

President Bola Tinubu has urged young Nigerians active in digital media to use their platforms responsibly and promote national unity.

Speaking at the progressives digital media summit held in Abuja on Friday, Tinubu said new media influencers must verify information before sharing and focus their influence on building a better society.

“Your generation has recognised this moment. You are using digital tools to innovate, educate, and demand accountability. But as your influence grows, so must our collective sense of purpose and responsibility,” he said.

The president also encouraged social media influencers to create jobs, produce uplifting content, and avoid narratives that could divide the country.

“Use your influence to foster unity, not division,” he added.

“Digital media is now a central driver of economic growth, civic engagement, and social change.”

Tinubu also highlighted the government’s support for digital innovation through the National Digital Innovation Fund and startup-friendly policies and warned against misinformation and cyber threats.

Femi Gbajabiamila, chief of staff (CoS) to the president, commended the role of digital media in shaping a new Nigeria.

“You are the vanguard of a reborn Nigeria. The road may be challenging, but it is necessary,” Gbajabiamila said.

Bayo Onanuga, special adviser on information and strategy to the president, warned that social media has become a chaotic space that allows misinformation to spread rapidly.

“Divisive content is rampant. Deepfakes and AI-generated content are increasingly used against political opponents,” Onanuga said.

“Misinformation spreads five times faster than official corrections.”

Segun Dada, presidential aide on new media and summit convener, said digital media has evolved into a powerful force, adding that its impact must be channelled toward national good.

Dada called for greater awareness of risks like privacy breaches and threats to social cohesion.

The summit brought together content creators, digital strategists, and political communicators under the theme “Unveiling the critical role of new media in national development.”
