Nigerian Navy Uncovers and Destroys 17,500 Litres of Stolen Crude Oil In Bonny
The Nigerian Navy has intensified its crackdown on crude oil theft and illegal bunkering activities under Operation Delta Sentinel, recording another operational success in the Bonny area of Rivers State.
Acting on the directive of the Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, naval personnel attached to the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Bonny uncovered and destroyed an illegal crude oil storage site hidden within the creeks of the Opotumbi general area.
According to the Navy, the discovery was made through the use of the Nigerian Navy’s maritime surveillance technology, which detected suspicious activity within a heavily vegetated creek. Following the intelligence, FOB Bonny elements swiftly moved to the location where they discovered four dug-out pits concealed beneath thick vegetation.
The pits were found to contain a combined total of about 17,500 litres of products suspected to be stolen crude oil. In line with existing operational guidelines, the recovered products were safely destroyed at the site.
The development highlights the renewed momentum of the Nigerian Navy in combating crude oil theft and other maritime crimes across the nation’s waterways.
The Navy reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining continuous patrols, enhanced maritime surveillance, and strong inter-agency collaboration to safeguard Nigeria’s critical national assets and protect the country’s economic interests within the maritime domain.
