Tension Eases in Benue Community After Council Boss’ Swift Intervention Over Killing
Residents of Apa-Agila in Ado Local Government Area of Benue State were thrown into panic following the alleged killing of an indigene by individuals suspected to be from the Ezza community, in an incident that threatened to spark communal unrest.
The victim’s lifeless body was reportedly discovered in a bush on the outskirts of the community, lying in a pool of blood. The discovery, made by a local search party, sent shockwaves across Apa-Agila and neighbouring settlements, heightening fear and uncertainty among residents.
Tension quickly escalated amid concerns of possible reprisal attacks by youths from Apa-Agila against members of the Ezza community, to which the suspected assailant is believed to belong. Some residents reportedly fled their homes, while others shut down businesses as rumours of impending violence spread.
Community sources said the fragile peace between the two groups was under serious threat as suspicion and anxiety grew. A resident described the situation as tense, noting that fear was widespread, particularly among Ezza residents who were apprehensive about potential retaliation.
Calm, however, was restored following the swift intervention of the Ado Local Government Chairman, Engr. Sunny Oche, who immediately mobilised security personnel to the affected areas. His prompt response is credited with preventing a breakdown of law and order.
Security operatives were deployed to strategic locations within Apa-Agila and surrounding communities, helping to reassure residents and deter any form of reprisal attack. Their presence contributed significantly to the de-escalation of tensions and gradual return to normalcy.
In a bid to address the root causes of the crisis and prevent future occurrences, the council chairman has also initiated the formation of a peace committee. The committee is expected to facilitate dialogue, ensure justice, and promote sustained peaceful coexistence among the communities.
Stakeholders from both sides have commended the chairman’s proactive approach, describing it as timely and essential in preserving unity in the area. Community leaders expressed optimism that the peace committee would provide a platform for conflict resolution and mutual understanding.
“This is a step in the right direction. Justice must be served, but peace must also prevail,” a local leader said.
Meanwhile, investigations into the killing are ongoing. A prime suspect has reportedly been arrested by the police, while efforts are underway to apprehend other individuals linked to the incident.
Leaders and stakeholders from the victim’s community have urged youths to remain calm and avoid any form of reprisal, assuring them that justice will be served through appropriate authorities.
Although calm has gradually returned to Apa-Agila, the incident highlights the fragile nature of inter-communal relations in the area and the importance of swift leadership intervention in preventing escalation.
