Troops Record Major Gains In Timbuktu Triangle, Disrupt Terrorist Networks

Troops of Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) have recorded significant operational successes in the ongoing offensive across the Timbuktu Triangle, dealing major blows to terrorist networks operating in the area.

In the latest phase of operations, troops advanced deeper into the triangle, clearing and dominating key terrorist strongholds in Tergejeri, Chiralia, and the Ajigin/Abirma general areas. During these operations, troops made intermittent contact with fleeing terrorist elements and engaged them with heavy firepower, resulting in the neutralisation of several terrorists.

On 20 January 2026, while consolidating at a harbour area about six kilometres north of Chilaria, troops encountered two Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Devices (VBIEDs). Through vigilance and swift response, one of the VBIEDs was successfully neutralised. The second, however, breached the defensive position, impacting some logistics platforms. During the incident, some soldiers and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) paid the supreme price, while others sustained injuries.

The wounded personnel were promptly evacuated by Nigerian Army Aviation helicopters to the 7 Division Medical Services and Hospital. Throughout the evacuation,

Nigerian Air Force platforms from the Air Component, working in synergy with other Nigerian Army air assets, provided continuous overwatch, ensuring the safe extraction of casualties while ground forces continued to engage and neutralise terrorist elements.

Further evidence of the heavy losses suffered by the terrorists was uncovered when troops discovered mass graves containing an estimated 20 terrorist bodies.

The bodies were believed to be those killed during previous encounters with troops in the Timbuktu Triangle and buried by their associates. The discovery highlights the scale of terrorist casualties and undermines propaganda claims by the groups.

Across the theatre of operations, the security situation remains generally stable. Troops’ morale and combat efficiency remain high as operations continue with sustained pressure on fleeing terrorist elements.

Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have reaffirmed their commitment to protecting civilians, dismantling terrorist networks, and restoring lasting peace and security across the North East.
