Uju Ohanenye Urges National Unity, Backs Tinubu’s Reforms at APC Convention

ABUJA, NIGERIA — Former Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy Ohanenye, has called on Nigerians—regardless of political affiliation—to support the ongoing reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration aimed at tackling systemic corruption and improving governance.
Speaking with journalists on the sidelines of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Convention in Abuja, Ohanenye emphasized that national development requires a unified effort beyond party lines.
“This is not just about political parties; it is about the people and the collective support needed to move the country forward. Nigerians must come together to build a better nation,” she said.
Ohanenye, who was appointed by President Tinubu in August 2023, defended the administration’s anti-corruption drive, noting that reforms are focused on addressing deep-rooted systemic leakages, particularly within ministries and public institutions.
“Corruption was largely embedded in the system, especially within ministries and the public service. The President has taken steps to address this by changing how funds are managed and disbursed,” she stated.
She highlighted measures such as direct allocation of funds to local government areas and stricter financial controls, which she said have significantly reduced opportunities for mismanagement.
“Funds are now more targeted and controlled. This reduces excesses and limits opportunities for corruption. These are structural changes that many people may not immediately understand,” she added.
Calling for patience, Ohanenye stressed that meaningful reforms require time to yield visible outcomes.
“When you are laying a solid foundation, it takes time. Nigerians should give the government the opportunity to complete these reforms. In time, the benefits will be evident to everyone,” she said.
She also advocated for a more inclusive and equitable society, urging citizens to reject discrimination, selfishness, and injustice.
“Nigeria is a great country, and every citizen deserves equal opportunity. There should be love, fairness, and unity among us. We must move away from selfishness and work for the common good,” she said.
Reaffirming her confidence in the current administration, Ohanenye pledged continued support for policies that promote national development.
“I believe in the direction the country is heading. I will continue to support efforts that bring progress and development to our people,” she added.
Looking ahead, Ohanenye declared her intention to contest for the presidency in 2031, expressing readiness to meet the financial requirements of the race.
“Even if the nomination form costs one billion naira, I am ready to purchase it,” she stated.
