Shockiπg: Ex-Convict Uses Broomstick To Unlock Chains, Flees Court

It was a dramatic moment in Ilorin Area Court on Tuesday when an ex-convict, identified as Segun Samuel, escaped from custody using an unconventional method—a broomstick.

Samuel, who had been brought to court in chains, skillfully used a broomstick to unlock the restraints on his legs.

Under the pretence of needing to use the restroom, he walked casually away from the courtroom and scaled the fence of the court premises before anyone could react.

However, he was later apprehended.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Prosecution Counsel, ASP Samuel Mayowa, who witnessed the incident, stated that the ex-convict is currently standing trial in four separate criminal cases.

“He has four different criminal cases in this court. One of the cases was heard on Monday and he was sentenced to one year imprisonment,” he said.

“In the second criminal case, he was sentenced to six months of community service and the third case was supposed to be heard today, before he pulled that stunt.”

He stated that, fortunately, police officers at the court premises, along with a prison warder, immediately sprang into action and gave chase.

After an extensive search and with the assistance of members of the community, the ex-convict was eventually located in a dilapidated building in the Oke-Suna area of Ilorin.

The fugitive was successfully apprehended and returned to custody.
