Madman; US Lawmaker Calls Trump
A United States lawmaker representing Massachusetts, Jim McGovern, has sharply criticised President Donald Trump, describing him as a “madman” over recent threats directed at Iran, as political backlash in Washington intensifies.
“The President of the United States is a madman,” McGovern said on Tuesday, reacting to Trump’s escalating rhetoric and warnings of potential military action.
McGovern, a Democrat who has served in the United States House of Representatives since 1997 and has represented Massachusetts’s 2nd congressional district since 2013, is also the ranking member of the House Rules Committee.
His comments come in response to a series of statements by Trump, including a controversial warning that “a whole civilisation will die Tonight” if a deal with Iran is not reached, remarks that have triggered alarm among lawmakers and foreign policy observers.
Reacting earlier to the statement, McGovern condemned the rhetoric in strong terms, warning of its legal and moral implications.
“This is pure evil. The President of the United States’ genocidal threat to commit war crimes is illegal under federal & international law. The U.S. military swears an oath to the Constitution, not the president. The joint staff is required to disobey any & all illegal orders. Speaker Johnson must immediately call Congress back to Washington & rein in this mad president,” he wrote in a post on X.

The criticism was echoed by former United States Vice President, Kamala Harris, who also issued a strongly worded condemnation of Trump’s remarks, framing them as dangerous and unsupported by the American public.
“The President of the United States is threatening to commit war crimes and wipe out a “whole civilization” — all because he started a disastrous war of his own making and had no plan and no strategy for how to end it,” she said.
“This is abhorrent, and the American people do not support this. Trump’s recklessness is needlessly putting our brave service members in harm’s way, destroying America’s global standing, and making life even more unaffordable for the American people.”
“We must all stand against this and oppose funding this illegal war of choice,” Harris said in a post on X on Tuesday.

Trump’s remarks, delivered through a series of posts on social media, have heightened already rising tensions between Washington and Tehran.
Earlier on Tuesday, he warned that “a whole civilization will die tonight” as the standoff between the United States and Iran deepened.
He added, “However, now that we have Complete and Total Regime Change, where different, smarter, and less radicalized minds prevail, maybe something revolutionarily wonderful can happen, WHO KNOWS? We will find out tonight, one of the most important moments in the long and complex history of the World. 47 years of extortion, corruption, and death, will finally end. God Bless the Great People of Iran!”
Earlier, Trump also issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Tehran, referencing the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz, a vital global oil transit route.
Meanwhile, developments within Iran suggest growing public anxiety over the possibility of conflict.
Following Trump’s threats to target critical infrastructure, including bridges and power plants, groups of Iranian youths have reportedly formed human chains around key facilities in an apparent attempt to deter potential strikes.
Videos seen on Tuesday show large crowds gathering at strategic locations, linking hands in symbolic resistance amid fears of imminent attacks.
